Apples Settles over Water Damage Lawsuit

Several of our blog posts (including yesterday’s) have focused on lawsuits against Apple.  While Apple has decided to fight the suit we discussed yesterday, the tech company settled today’s suit for $53 million.

The class action lawsuit stems from issues related to warranties covering both iPods and iPhones. According to the plaintiffs in the suit, the technology that Apple had installed into the devices to detect water damage was defective, indicating water damage based on humidity or moisture that resulted from typical use as opposed to true liquid damage at the fault of the owner.

While the court documents show that Apple disagreed with the assessment, the case was nevertheless settled. Apple has been criticized in the past for its warranties, but this time the 153,000 consumers who were affected by the faulty component will share in the settlement fund.
