A Breach of Contract Victory

Congratulations to Patterson Law Firm’s Elise Yu! She recently won a in a breach of contract dispute on behalf of a restaurant owner. Our client was a 50% owner of a popular restaurant and bar in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood. He sold his stake in the restaurant to a long-time acquaintance.

As is common in the industry, the parties made two separate agreements. One to sell the stocks in the corporation that owned the restaurant and the other to sell the liquor license. The seller eventually refused to pay for the liquor license and then denied that the parties had made any agreement. We were retained, alleged a breach of an oral contract for the sale of the liquor license, and took the matter to arbitration. Despite the seller’s denials of the agreement, Elise destroyed his credibility at both his deposition and in the arbitration. The arbitrator awarded our client the full amount in damages that we sought.
