Qualcomm Loses Patent Infringement Suit Filed by Blackberry in Arbitration

On April 12th 2017, Qualcomm lost a suit and now has to pay $815 million in royalty fees to Blackberry. Blackberry paid royalty fees in advance to Qualcomm to use their cell phone parts that were industry standard. Although Blackberry was told it would only have to pay a certain amount with a capped ceiling, Qualcomm kept charging. The contracted cap didn’t get applied on time. Qualcomm stated that Blackberry’s payments are nonrefundable.

Qualcomm’s business strategy relies heavily on making profits on licensing their products. This decision and settlement agreement are a major hit to how Qualcomm runs its business. This suit could impact the pending litigation Qualcomm and Apple have.
